I thought I’d talk about this as it was one of my biggest concerns when starting university. I was worried about who I’d be living with, if I’d like them, if they’d like me, what my room will be like, if my flat mates will be tidy and where will I live in second year. My advice is stay calm! Admittedly, I’m not the biggest fan of my flat mates but they’re bearable and avoidable. It’s no big deal if you don’t get on with them, as long as you can bare being in the same room with them whilst making tea, you’ll be fine. You’ll meet people on your course (which I’ll move onto in part 2). And as for the being tidy part, you’ll find ways to deal with it. Luckily we have a cleaner who comes free of charge ever fortnight. If my flat mates ever leave their dirty dishes lying around, I’ll pile them all up by the sink and they’ll eventually get cleaned. I will admit that I haven’t got anyone I plan on living with next year due to various reasons (I do have friends though, I promise!). However, it’s a lot easier than you would think to find housing for just yourself.

I managed to find a place next door to the student halls I am living in now which is similar to halls in that you share a floor with a certain number of people and share the kitchen with them, but all the rooms are en-suite. Here they have some floors reserved for group bookings then rent out rooms to single students too. However, I found a lot more than this! Student accommodation can be cheaper in your second year too, wether you choose somewhere with the bills included or excluded. But if this isn’t enough, to put your mind at ease you could even look at student accommodation as if you were a second year before you go so you can get an idea of what is on offer. Also, when you do go into your first year, it’s usually best to start looking for second year accommodation as soon as you can, by around January, so you can get the best of what’s out there!
